TIMELINE PERIOD: Last episode, a couple seconds before he dies.
BACKGROUND:Val was a young member of the race of Ancient Dragons. They were few in number and smallest in size compared to the other dragon species, but they were the strongest by far. A single Ancient could have the power of a thousand Golds, and Golden Dragons were the second strongest.
The Ancient Dragons were the guardians of a weapon from another world, but they refused to use that and their own power to help the Golds fight a war against their eternal enemies, the demons (in this world, Golden Dragons play the role of angels against the demons, though they are just as flawed as humans.)
The Golden Dragons feared that the Ancients might side with the demons instead, though in truth, the ancients were only trying to protect the world and keep it balanced. In an act of something between arrogance and paranoia, the Golden Dragons massacred the Ancients. Because the Golds outnumbered them, and the Ancients were reluctant to fight, they succeeded in killing all but one.
Val, wounded and in human form, was trying to escape a pair of Golden Dragon soldiers when he ran into the renegade demon lord, Gaav. Because they were both survivors seemingly pitted against the entire world, Gaav took Val as his servant, killing him and resurrecting him as a half-demon. He was renamed Valgaav.
For a thousand years, they survived together, and Valgaav developed a deep loyalty to Lord Gaav.
Then, Gaav was destroyed, apparently by a mere human sorceress named Lina Inverse (Val later learned that it was actually the demon lord Hellmaster Phibrizo who had struck the killing blow, but by then he was too far gone for it to matter).
Having lost everything he ever cared for, Valgaav sought revenge, both on Lina Inverse and on the world itself. His plan involved summoning a demon god from another world and helping it destroy his own. Ultimately, he wanted the world to be reset, born again and its inhabitants reincarnated so that, just maybe, life on the new world would be more fair.
The human sorceress Lina Inverse, along with four allies (two other humans, a demon priest, and a golden dragon priestess) fought and eventually found a way to defeat Valgaav. As their spell, a mix of holy and dark magic, struck him, he smiled sadly. "At last I die... All returns to white."
.... and then he awoke on a ship to Rivelata.
Personality-wise, Valgaav tends to be very driven, confident, and downright arrogant. He does sometimes find himself dragged into states of depression by his past, but more often he faces it with self-rightious anger. He was near-insane after the loss of Gaav, but in those last moments before his own death, he accepted his fate and, perhaps, the world itself. The strength and determination of a mere human girl impressed him, though his pride may make him loath to admit such a thing unless under the right circumstances.
ABILITIES: Like most of the high ranking demons, Valgaav has access to black magic, and unlike humans, he doesn't need to chant any words to cast spells. He can also use a laser breath attack inherent to dragons. Being half dragon, he can partially transform, gaining large, black-feathered wings, and sometimes also changing his arms - long, black, and taloned. However, because dragons and demons are opposites, the powers often conflict within him when used, causing him great pain.
Of course, in Rivelata, these powers will be all but nonexistent at first.
